PRIME Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama has sent a letter to Solomon Islands Prime Minister Gordon Darcy Lilo to express Fiji's condolences for those who lost their lives during the recent tsunami that hit the island nation.

"On behalf of the government and people of Fiji, I express my deepest condolences for the earthquake and resulting tsunami that occurred in the Santa Cruz islands on Wednesday morning that claimed the lives of 10 people," Commodore Bainimarama said in his condolence message.

"We convey our wishes for a quick recovery to those who were injured and my government is ready to provide you and your people with whatever assistance that may be required," Commodore Bainimarama said.

"At this difficult time, our thoughts over those who passed away weighs heavily in our hearts in Fiji and our deepest sympathies and prayers are with the families of the victims and all the people of the Solomon Islands," he said.

A metre-high tsunami hit the remote Santa Cruz islands last Wednesday following a magnitude 8.0 earthquake — that claimed 10 lives and left more than 3000 people squatting in shelters after their homes were destroyed.
