LAUTOKA will be the first urban centre in the country with closed circuit television or CCTV cameras.
Lautoka City Council special administrator Pravin Bala made the announcement yesterday after meeting with National Security Minister Joketani Cokanasiga, Police Commissioner Brigadier General Ioane Naivalurua and leading law enforcement officers yesterday.
He said while he was pleased that Lautoka was declared the safest city last quarter, the installation of CCTV cameras would ensure that the Sugar City maintained this achievement.
"I am happy to announce that the Lautoka City Council has approved the installation of CCTV cameras in the central business district area. This is phase one and phase two will include residential areas," Mr Bala said.
The total cost of the project is expected to be $50,000.
