THE Pacific Environment Community Fund has provided about $US1.7million ($F3million) for the installation of desalination plants at Kia and Kavewa islands in Macuata, Vanuavatu in Lau and Viwa in the Yasawa Group.

Water Authority of Fiji spokeswoman Kelera Serelini confirmed that a team from the Water and Sewerage department was dispatched to Kavewa and Kia last week to finalise the sites of the desalination plants and receive confirmation of support for availability and consent for the land.

"The two islands have their small water systems, rainwater collection, borehole systems and small stream catchments which dry up during droughts leaving people without potable water," said Ms Serelini.

"These desalination plants, once installed, will treat seawater through a process called reverse osmosis to produce fresh potable water."
