Call for health over trade

Felix Chaudhary
Wednesday, February 13, 2013

PUBLIC health interests should override trade interests that serve to counter the efforts of public health.

This was the view expressed by the deputy director general of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), Fekitamoeloa Utoikamanu, while speaking at the opening of a workshop on the link between trade and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Nadi.

She said until Pacific island countries were able to address challenges where trade provisions are used to overturn restrictions on unhealthy products entering the market, NCDs would continue to be an issue in the Pacific.

Ms Utoikamanu said the interests of public health should take priority.
