THE head of Government Shipping Services (GSS) and Navy Commander John Fox will lead a team to Korea and Japan today to inspect potential additions to the government's shipping fleet.

A government statement quotes Cdr Fox as saying the purchase of a vessel is in line the with the government's commitment to improve shipping services.

"This will make work easier for the GSS and those in the outer islands," Cdr Fox said.

"As well, if we purchase a tug boat, it will be able pull a barge which will cart equipment, machines and other heavy loads," he said.

The team will spend two weeks in Korea and Japan before presenting a recommendation to the government.

Government has allocated $3million in this year's budget for the purchase of vessels to boost services to those living in the outer islands.
