Man found guilty

THE 46-year-old man of Tavua found guilty of raping his daughter in 2006 will be sentenced by the High Court in Lautoka on February 11. Divisional police prosecutor ASP Anil Prasad told the court the incident occurred when the accused was alone with his then 14-year-old daughter on the night of September 25, that year. He told the court the young girl was raped by her father.

$1000 fine

A MAN from Rifle Range in Lautoka was slapped with a $1000 fine after he was found guilty of drunk driving. Divisional police prosecutor ASP Anil Prasad told the court the man had a blood alcohol level of more than 9.0 when he was stopped by authorities last year. He said the man was also sentenced to six months imprisonment which was suspended for two years by the Lautoka Magistrates Court.

Accused awaits sentence

A FORMER court clerk has been found guilty of stealing more than $11,000 from the Sigatoka court registry office. Charged with one count of larceny by servant, Josefa Namisi appeared before judge Siromi Dokonivalu Turaga at the Sigatoka Magistrates Court yesterday. Police prosecutor ASP Anil Prasad said Namisi had been found guilty of misappropriating a total of $11,088.53 of court funds. Namisi is alleged to have committed the crimes between January 2007 and January 2008. The accused will be sentenced next week.

FIVE men accused of raping a 19-year-old woman in Ra last month made their first appearance at the High Court in Lautoka on Thursday. The accused persons whose ages ranged between 18 and 27 years of age are each charged with one count of rape. The men are alleged to have raped the woman after a grog party in the early hours of January 24. The men revealed their intentions to submit bail applications during the High Court appearance.
