All safe in Honiara

FIJIANS in Honiara are safe as the earthquake-hit island of Santa Cruz continues to experince aftershocks.

Speaking from Honiara, Sitiveni Halofaki said the Fijian community there was safe and remained in high spirits.

"The only province affected was Temotu province and Santa Cruz Island. It's actually closer to Vanuatu," Mr Halofaki said.

Another Fijian national, Teerath Shandil, said he had been in contact with other Fijians in Honiara.

The Solomon Telecom employee said a team from the telecommunications company would be sent to Temotu province to assess the damage to phone lines there.

In a statement yesterday, the honorary consul of Fiji to the Solomon Islands, Atueta Balekana, said it would take some days before the real extent of devastation and deaths is confirmed.
