A MAN who escaped from prison will add another year to his current term.

Ioane Benedito is charged with one count of escaping from lawful custody and damaging property.

His actions according to Magistrate Yohan Liyanage showed that Benedito was not willing to accept and abide by the orders of the court.

The court heard that on November 18 last year, Benedito escaped from the Domanu dormitory at the Suva Prison.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Jitendra Singh told the court that Benedito escaped through the two steel grille bars of a toilet window of the dormitory.

He said a roll call was conducted later that evening when prison officers realised he was missing.

Sgt Singh said he was captured 10 days later at Komai Settlement in Nabua by police officers from the Nabua Police Station.

Mr Liyanage then sentenced Benedito to eight months imprisonment for the first count of escaping from lawful custody and four months on the charge of damaging property.

He was also fined $319 for the damage caused to the blankets, reinforcing bars, chain fence and razor barbed wire.
