Three months for escapees

THREE of four men who escaped from lawful custody last December will have another three months added to their current jail terms.

Kunal Singh, Bimlesh Dayal and Deshwar Dutt were sentenced by Magistrate Chaitanya Lakshman yesterday at the Suva Magistrates Court. A trial date will be set for the fourth accused Viliame Vunisina who pleaded not guilty.

Singh, Dayal and Dutt escaped from the Suva Corrections Centre.

They were charged with one count each of escaping from lawful custody and one of damaging property.

In sentencing the accused men, Magistrate Lakshman said it was important for the trio to note that the community looked down on people like them.

"Do not think you are heroes if you break out from correction centres," Magistrate Lakshman said.

"You genuinely need to reform and change your behaviour and actions or you will continue being on the wrong side of the law."
