THE Athletics Fiji organised weekly athletics competition yesterday received its best attendance to date since its introduction in November last year.

Over 60 athletes turned up for competition at the Cathedral Secondary School grounds in Suva yesterday.

Athletics Fiji president Albert Miller was elated with the response of the athletes.

He said it was better late than never and hoped the number would continue to increase.

"Its always the case, athletes wait for the festive season to end and for school to start so that they can start their training," Miller said.

"But it's a good response and I just hope it continues to improve," he said.

Miller said he would also like to see athletes in the national squad preparing for the Mini Pacific Games later this year to come and compete with the other athletes.

"I know the national squad members are training but they also need to compete to gauge if they are making progress or no.

"Also we need to see these athletes compete before they can be named in the final side that will travel to the Mini Games.

"I would like to encourage national training squad members to come forward and compete so they know which areas they need to train in," he said.
