Plan for cyclone-proof city

Saturday, January 26, 2013

LAUTOKA City is working on projects and promoting activities that will make the city cyclone resistant.

The move follows the devastation left behind by Tropical Cyclone Evan late last year.

Minister for Local Government Colonel Samuela Saumatua said during a visit to the Sugar City last Thursday that one of the council's major projects for this year would be to ensure that the Sugar City was cyclone-proof. He said the council would review the city's drainage system.

He said the construction of cyclone-resistant buildings was also in the plans.

According to LCC special administrator Pravin Bala, the disaster fund it had set up for the clean-up following Cyclone Evan was $100,000.

Mr Bala said clean-up of residential areas in Lautoka city was almost complete.
