THE 2013 Coca-Cola Games will be the first event to be hosted at the new ANZ Stadium in Suva in April.

As earlier promised, yesterday, Fiji Sports Council chairman Peter Mazey confirmed they would complete the construction before the Coke Games begins.

He said despite the hiccups they faced the new stadium would be completed in April.

"We have had many setbacks while constructing the new stadium. We came across the cyclone and the shortage of cement which delayed our work for a couple of days. But I am happy to announce that we are working very hard to complete everything in April," he said.

"The 2013 Coca-Cola Games will be the first event hosted at this new ANZ Stadium."

Mazey said the running tracks were from Malaysia.

"The athletes will be the ones who will benefit the most from this new construction because they will be able to compete on international standard tracks and ground and we hope to win more Olympic gold medals in the future."

Mazey said they were pleased with the progress of construction.

"The new stadium is up to the FIFA and IRB standard so that means we can host international games in the future.

FSC chief executive officer Litia Loabuka said the contractors were putting extra effort in the daily work.

"I believe the contractors have employed some more workers to help in the everyday work. This is the commitment of how they want the stadium to be completed on the scheduled date."

She thanked the government for assistance in constructing the new stadium.
