WELLINGTON - All Whites skipper Ryan Nelsen has announced his retirement from international football.

There had been doubt surrounding the veteran defender's international future after he was named head coach of Toronto FC earlier this month.

Nelsen, who begins his new role on February 1, had said he was finding it difficult to keep playing: "I am playing on glass knees and glass ankles. It is a bit of a struggle."

He will play his final game for English Premier League side Queens Park Rangers against defending champions Manchester City on January 29.

"I believe that I leave the team in a good space with quality players able to carry on the recent success the All Whites have enjoyed," Nelsen said.
