ORGANISERS of the 2013 Summer Cup golf competition are expecting over 25 women to compete in the tournament this season.

The FMF Foods Ltd-sponsored tournament starts today at the Fiji Golf Club in Vatuwaqa and Ladies Captain Margaret Browne said she wanted to see more women compete this year compared to last year.

The Summer Cup is a 9-hole tournament that runs over eight weeks and today's competition will see the women play the front nine.

Browne, who is also the defending champion of the tournament, said she was looking to retain her title but would need to lift her game.

"This is because of the stiff competition that I might face in the tournament," she said.

"Players get points in this tournament every week depending on their placing and we total the points at the end of the tournament to determine the winner."

She said every player received one point for every week they played and that one point could make a huge difference at the end of the competition.

"We are hoping to see 24 starters tomorrow (today) and they will play the front nine because it's too hot to play the whole course.

"As for other contenders for the title, there are players like Rose Sue, Claire Mariner and Doreen Chew.

"These players have been consistent whole of last season and will be aiming to carry on their momentum in this season," Browne said.
