Ba maintains lead

DEFENDING champions Ba maintained the top status in the Fiji Sun/GP Batteries National Football League after beating Navua 2-0 at Prince Charles Park in Nadi yesterday.

Roneel Kumar's 57th minute goal virtually killed Navua's hopes of an upset result in their opening match of the season.

The goal by Kumar was the turning point in the match which even Navua coach Manoj Kumar stated proved to be the killer blow.

Manoj classed Roneel's strike as special.

"Good goals win you matches," the former Navua rep said.

"That is what Roneel proved. His goal was the turning point. It was as if the goalkeeper miss-judged the flight of the ball.

"When a team like Ba is by a goal up it is hard to come back and beat them. The second goal which Ba scored was a bit dubious as the ball seemed to have come off Abbu Zahid's hand."

Navua, with its youthful line-up, held Ba gallantly for the first 45 minutes. However the southerner's failed to match Ba's experience in the second spell.

Ba team manager Iliaz Khan said the three points was important to them. He said the aim this year was to win all the matches in the NFL.

"We had stated before the game that we would be doing our talking on the field," Khan said.

"Navua adopted a defensive pattern so it took time for our players to settle. But it is a good result. In Fiji now all the teams are equal."

Malakai Tiwa scored the second goal for the Men in Black in the 69th minute.

Teams:

Ba: Jone Ralulu, Josefata Neibuli, Jone Vesikula, Marika Madigi, Avinesh Suwamy, Kiniviliame Naika, Laisenia Raura, Roneel Kumar, Malakai Tiwa, Abbu Zahid, Tuimasi Manuca.

Navua: Sheik Moshin, Praveen Kumar, Vineet Chand, Rajnil Chand, James Charitar, Sailosi Livatalo, Inia Boko, Rajnesh Raju, Kolinio Sivoki, Netani Doli, Apisai Smith.
