PUBLIC Service Commission chairman, Josefa Serulagilagi has announced the appointment of Alifereti Filipe as permanent secretary for the Ministry of Provincial Development and National Disaster Management.

Mr Seruilagilagi said Mr Filipe had a proven record of leadership and administrative skills that would enhance the capabilities of staff at the ministry.

"I am confident of his capabilities and am assured that he will effectively manage and provide quality policy advice on rural development activities as well as matters pertaining to national disaster management," he said.

As the permanent secretary, Mr Filipe will be responsible to the minister for the formulation and implementation of policies and strategies of rural development programmes and activities through district and divisional administration using the rural consultative machinery.

He will also be responsible for provision of administrative support services, regional planning research and policy advice, rural development and rural housing, disaster management and other ancillary services.

Mr Filipe joined the civil service in 1975 as a Technical Officer in the Ministry of Agriculture. In 1979, he went to Lebanon with the United Nations Interim Forces and then joined McGowans International Consultants in 1981.

He has been in several key posts and in 2008, he was deputy head of mission and counsellor at the Fiji Embassy in Beijing before returning in 2012 to be the deputy secretary for the Policy Analysis Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister. In October 2012, he was posted to the Ministry of Provincial Development as acting PS.

The appointment is effective from January 10, 2013.
