Jail for rapist

A 47-YEAR-OLD man has been sentenced to seven years in prison by the High Court in Lautoka for raping a 14-year-old girl.

Chen Wen Jian was found guilty of two counts of rape by Justice Sitambarampillai Thurairaja in Lautoka yesterday.

According to the court, the victim was taken by her sister on the pretext of getting her a job but was forced to have sex with the accused.

The father of two teenage children who looks after his parents received mixed opinions from the assessors.

The court revealed two assessors found the accused not guilty of rape on the second charge.

However, Justice Thurairaja ultimately delivered the final verdict and sent Jian to seven years behind bars.

While sentencing Jian, the High Court judge said rape was the most serious sexual offence and a long custodial sentence was inevitable.

Jian has been given 30 days to appeal the sentence.
