A NEEDS assessment survey would be carried out for sugar cane farmers in Ba and Rakiraki by the Rarawai and Penang Cane Growers Association (RPCGA).
The survey follows a new multi-million dollar deal with the European Union funded Fairtrade Coordination Unit in which more than $1.5million would be paid to the association for the 2012 crop.
RPCGA president Gyan Singh said the survey was to find the needs of each farmer as they prepared to establish community projects that would benefit them. "I'm confident we will do what's best for the farmers and for our Fairtrade Certification deal," he said.
"We want to find out what their basic needs are like water supply and education," Mr Singh said.
"We need a lot of things to be upgraded like our schools particularly our primary school and we need new provisions for clean drinking water."
