THE Consumer Council of Fiji is targeting 10 per cent of the population in its 'Switch and Save' campaign, which was launched on Tuesday.

Council chief executive officer, Premila Kumar said the council would mainly target rural areas in its awareness this year.

"This year, for starters, we will target the first 10 per cent," she said.

For the first campaign launched this year, the campaign is an awareness initiative to encourage consumers to switch to energy-saver lightbulbs in order to reduce their electricity bills, and contribute to sustainable consumption.

"Not only does this invoke consumers to exercise their consumer responsibility, it also is one of the many ways in which they can practically reduce their electricity bills and save money for other needs," Mrs Kumar said.

She said it would take time to change people's perspective or mind-set to react to the awareness.

"If 10 per cent of our households do make this switch, obviously these consumers will spread the word and then we can change the mind-sets," Mrs Kumar said.
