THE proposed $250million Dreketi-to-Nabouwalu road upgrade project in the Northern Division is expected to commence next month.

Fiji Roads Authority manager change Mike Rudge said the proposed work would be carried out by China Railway Group.

"We are expecting such work to begin at the end of next month and it will take the Chinese company about two and half years to complete," he said.

"The public can rest assured of a high quality road as they will be travelling on a well-structured and upgraded highway."

Mr Rudge said the project would also give way to more economic opportunities in the area.

"The highway is expected to bring in more economic activities and job opportunities for the local community.

"This is good news because it will also uplift the standard of living for rural dwellers," he said.

It was earlier reported that the proposed work was scheduled to commence in October last year but was deferred because of the delay in finalising the funding.

Government is undertaking a massive roads upgrading exercise around the country and has allocated tens of millions of dollars for this purpose.
