THE Ministry of Health will look at outsourcing other mortuaries around the country.
Deputy permanent secretary for Health, Doctor Josefa Koroivueta revealed this after the Colonial War Memorial Hospital old wing morgue was contracted to Suva Funeral Directors.
"The outsourcing of the morgue for now is only confined to Suva," he said.
"I believe that if this one works out, the ministry will also look at outsourcing other mortuaries around the country."
Once the outsourced mortuaries were contracted, Dr Koroivueta said they would work independently from the Health Ministry.
"The contract for Suva Funeral Directors is for a period of two years. It was endorsed by Cabinet at the cabinet meeting on December 4, 2012."
The company shall upon execution of the agreement renovate facilities at the CWM Hospital at its own cost.
Operating as the Suva Morgue Service Limited, Dr Koroivueta said it would employ three existing hospital morgue staff.
"Suva Funeral shall provide two days of free morgue service and shall levy a charge from the third day onwards and will provide a 24-hour service," he said.
