THE Fiji Junior Golf Open Championship tees off today at the Vatuwaqa golf course.
With 36 junior golfers confirming their participation, organisers say they are looking forward to the event after a lapse of several years. The FJGO championship was last held in the early 1990s. Fiji Golf Club official Veramu Rokotavaga said today's event would mark a revival for the event.
"We had the event back in 1994 and '95 but all of a sudden it came to a halt because of some problems with our sponsorship at that time," he said.
"But now we are glad to have someone sponsoring the event."
The two-day event is sponsored by former Fiji resident John Cooper with the co-sponsors being Bank of South Pacific (BSP), Flour Mills of Fiji (FMF) and Central Manufacturers Fiji Limited.
"We are thankful to our sponsors for coming on board to support the event. We have a good number of junior golfers who have registered to be part of the event. We hope the tournament will end on a high note."
Rokotavaga said players would play according to their age groups and handicaps. The youngest competitor is seven-years old.
Rokotavaga added such competitions would help attract players at a very young age.
The 36-hole stroke event tees off at 9am.
