A FAMILY of seven in Waila, Nausori, were left thanking their lucky stars following a huge landslide on Tuesday that could have taken their entire house down.
Home owner 45-year- old Antala Devi said the landslide occurred during heavy downpour in the Nausori on Tuesday.
Mrs Devi said it occurred around 11pm when her family members were sleeping.
"We were not aware that a landslide had occurred. My husband who was away in Labasa received a call on his mobile from my neighbours saying there was a huge landslide near the back of the house," she said.
Mrs Devi said her husband called her to relay the news.
"I woke up my children and when we opened the back door of our house, we were shocked to see the huge mass of soil that had shifted," she said.
Mrs Devi said after the landslide, her family now lived in fear because their house could fall apart at any time.
"I have children attending school. We are not a rich family and my husband is a bus driver. We need support from the government," she said.
Mrs Devi called on the government to assist her family in building a retaining wall at the back of her house to prevent it from collapsing.
