THE elderly in the district of Lekutu in Bua were not forgotten this festive season as bauxite mining company officials visited them bearing gifts.
Villagers of Nawailevu, Lovonidalo and the surrounding settlements, Nakadrudru and Noro were given bags of groceries as gifts from workers at the Aurum Exploration (Fiji) Ltd.
Company executive Herbert He said the groceries were to assist families affected by Tropical Cyclone Evan.
"The cyclone which affected these elderly people made the donation more poignant because of its devastation on the homes and livelihood of the local people," Mr He said.
Company officials had conducted a survey of families affected and the number of elderly in the area.
Villager Sereima Ratu, 85, said the kind gesture from the company would not be forgotten.
Mrs Ratu said she was happy to see investors help villagers during the festive season.
"Our village was affected by strong winds and the company officials have been good that they have come to see us and give these groceries in this great time of need," she said. "Since the company started mining our land, we have been receiving all sorts of assistance from them."
