HEAVY rain in parts of Labasa yesterday resulted in flash floods in low-lying areas.

Villagers of Vuo, outside Labasa Town were awoken when floodwaters rushed through the village green and entered two houses.

Villager Semi Kamikamica said at 6am, he saw water enter his house while the rest of his family lay sleeping.

"Just as well the floodwaters were not too high to cause much damage in the house.

"It just started rising and a little water came inside, so I opened the door to sweep it out," he said.

"This is a situation I face every time it rains heavily because of the blocked drain and culvert by the main road."

Assistant village headman Joji Suqulu said every time it rained, water would flood the village green.

"It's an ongoing problem and no matter how much work we do to clear the drains and culvert, the problem remains.

"There were some assessments done last year by officials but nothing else has happened after that."

Villager Seruwaia Vuli said: "It happens all the time it rains, flood waters come into the village and brings in all the rubbish it collects on the way and dumps it in our compounds.

"I woke up about 5am and saw the flood in the village, so I woke everyone else in the house so we could prepare ourselves in case the water level rose but we were lucky it didn't."

Meanwhile, more rain is expected in Labasa over the coming days.
