FORMER national rep Amitesh Chandra will defend the gold medal in the top flight during the Nadi Airport Golf Club gold medal playoffs tomorrow.

The playoffs will coincide with the 2012 season closing event.

Amitesh, who is the secretary of the National Golf Association of Fiji, will face stiff competition in the A grade from veteran Ram Khelawan, Mohammed Faiyaz and Ritesh Chandra.

Baroon Hussein and Anuresh Chandra will miss the event. Hussein will be participating in a junior tournament in Suva while Anuresh will be flying to Melbourne to play in the Australian Master of Amateurs Championship.

In the B grade the battle for the gold medal will be between NAGC captain Salesh Singh, vice president Chandra Segran Pillay, Hari Ram and Swami Vivekananda College student Shavil Prasad.

Avikash Chand and Vinod Chauhan are the contenders for the gold medal in the C grade.

NAGC vice president Pillay said all the monthly medal winners would feature in the gold medal playoffs.

He said the golfers from the other clubs in the Western Division had been invited to participate in the season closing event.

"We have extended invitation to golfers from Lautoka, Ba and Vatukoula," Pillay said.

"The clubhouse and course in these areas have suffered damage due to Tropical Cyclone Evan.

"There will be special prizes for the visitors."

"For the gold medal playoffs we expect a tight contest.

"The golfers will be aiming to end the 2012 season on a high note."

The tournament is sponsored by Jacks of Fiji.

The 2012 NAGC season was prolonged because of the floods and Tropical Cyclone Evan.
