THE Fiji Roads Authority could be spending up to $25million to replace the two closed bridges in the capital city.
Fiji Roads Authority manager change Mike Rudge said the Stinson Pde bridge and the Fletcher Rd Bridge needed to be replaced with new ones.
"The preliminary cost is $6 million to $10 million to replace the bridge at Fletcher Rd, and between $10 million to $15 million for the bridge at Stinson Pde," Mr Rudge said.
However Mr Rudge said these costs were preliminary and could change
"We are still working through the estimates for these and do not have final costs," he explained
He said it would take two years just to construct one new bridge.
"We are looking to replace the bridge at Stinson Pde as well as the Fletcher Rd bridge because their conditions are not fit to be repaired."
For the two bridges, he said it would take anywhere from eight months to two years to replace them.
However, he said they were still working on the plan to determine the date of the construction.
"We are still working on our long time plan on the designing and the construction of the bridges and they are expected to be completed after two years."
Furthermore, he said they were planning to make the Fletcher Rd bridge a one way bridge.
He added they would make further announcements on the final design and date of construction after the final draft plans were passed.
About 30 bridges will be repaired or reconstructed around Fiji over the next five years.
A total of $422 million was set aside for roads and bridges in the 2013 National Budget. This was an increase of $182 million.
