NINETEEN-year-old Mosese Toma Bolobolo is counting his lucky stars after opting out of that fateful trip that caused the death of his cousin Penasio Cerecere in an accident at Lovu outside Lautoka on January 1.
In an interview with this newspaper yesterday, the Vitogo villager said he was part of the drinking party before the accident happened.
"We were celebrating the new year when the accident happened and it ruined all our celebration," Mr Bolobolo said.
"I was shocked to hear the sad news because not only were my friends in the car, but most importantly I was supposed to be in that car.
"We were just returning from a picnic and celebrating with friends in the village," he explained.
"After a while we ran short of beer and decided to go to Lautoka and buy more.
"Many of us wanted to go in that trip but since the car could only take five people I opted to stay behind.
"Who knows I could be one of those involved in the accident."
Mr Bolobolo said the accident taught him a good lesson but he was sad that his cousin died in it.
"I have learnt a lot from this accident but I was lucky to opt out of that trip," said Mr Bolobolo.
