A 25-year-old man was yesterday remanded in custody after being charged with aggravated robbery on New Year's day.

Lepani Saumuri of Dreketi Village in Rewa and another accomplice robbed a man of $172 cash and a mobile phone valued at $700.

The complainant and his friend were walking along Victoria Parade on the morning of New Year's day when Mr Saumuri approached the complainant and held him by the neck, while his accomplice came from behind and put his hands in the pocket of the complainant and took out the money and the mobile phone.

The complainant with the help of his friend managed to restrain Mr Saumuri. A police officer who was patrolling the street that morning came to their assistance.

Mr Saumuri had asked for bail but the police prosecution objected to bail saying the crime Mr Saumuri was charged with was a serious offence and asked that the matter be transferred to the High Court.

Presiding magistrate Sufia Hamza ruled in favour of the prosecution and ordered that Mr Saumuri be remanded in custody and the matter to be transferred to the High Court.

The matter has been adjourned to January 25.
