Water woes make life difficult

THE New Year did not allow for much celebration for some residents in the Veisari area, as they have not received normal water supply for over one month.

Malingi Rokosuka of Veisari lives with her paralysed husband and eight grandchildren and said her life had become extremely difficult over the past month.

"All the lower areas are receiving water fine, but our area has been experiencing no water flow," the Veisari resident told this newspaper on Monday.

"Water really needs to be restored because it is a necessity, especially since two of my eight grandchildren are just babies," she added.

Another resident said he had been experiencing the same problems for over a month also.

The man, who wished not to be named, added that over the one-month plus period, there were only two water carting trucks that came by to give them water.

"I had to call the water authority so many times before anything was done," he explained.

"We're suffering, we have to wait for the rain because then that becomes our water source … there is a shop four blocks away from where we stay and they are receiving water," the resident added.

The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) told this newspaper that the main issue was a burst main which could not be seen.

"The area was without water due to a hidden burst main our team was trying to locate for a week," WAF communications officer, Kelera Serelini said.

"They have now located the burst and our team has started repairing the main.

"Water will be restored once repair work is completed," she confirmed.
