Stern warning to fire starters

Maciu Malo
Tuesday, January 01, 2013

ANYONE found responsible for causing structural and forest fires will be taken to task.

The decision was made as heads of government departments met in Lautoka yesterday.

Apart from cyclone rehabilitationin progress, the meeting discussed the incidents of structural and forest fires in the division.

An ultimatum was reached that those found starting fires would be taken to task.

"We have received reports from the Forestry Department about an increase in bushfires over the past few months," said Commissioner Western Commander Joeli Cawaki.

"Members of the community are requested to submit names of people causing fires during the emergency period.

"We will take people to task.

"The burning of forests is worse than natural disasters such as cyclones because they destroy newly-planted trees," said Cdr Cawaki at the meeting.
