Ration for island

TEMPORARY food and water rations have been supplied to the Yasawa Group with a team of officials already on the islands, which will also carry out damage assessments.

Commissioner Western Commander Joeli Cawaki said after the aerial survey yesterday it was a scene of despair to see fallen trees as well as some damage to houses and vegetation by Tropical Cyclone Evan.

"It will take six months to rebuild houses but we can reassure everyone living on the islands that government will be providing the much-required assistance to the various villages," Cdr Cawaki said.

He said one of the worst-affected areas is Waya Island and teams have been deployed to these places with temporary food supplies.

Cdr Cawaki has also confirmed that later next week another shipment will take essential food and water rations to the island.
