FIJI is ready to shoulder the huge responsibility of chairing the Group of Seventy Seven developing nations plus China, known as the G77 meeting in New York, next year.
This was announced during a press conference by Fiji's permanent representative to the United Nations, Peter Thomson, yesterday.
Mr Thomson said Fiji was eager to chair one of the world's biggest meetings and show the rest of the world "Fiji's commitment".
He said the meeting would also bring Fiji closer to the 132 countries who are part of the G77.
"For the very first time, a developing country from the Pacific has been chosen to chair the G77 meeting. It is one of the biggest international challenge Fiji has," Mr Thompson said.
