Sugar mills halt crushing

Repeka Nasiko
Monday, December 17, 2012

ALL sugar mills in the Western Division have closed until further notice.

Fiji Sugar Corporation chief executive officer Abdul Khan confirmed the last mill to close down yesterday was Rarawai mill in Ba.

"Currently, the only mill that is still in operation at the moment is Rarawai and we have advised all the lorry drivers to bring in their cane no later than 6pm today (yesterday).

"By 7pm we should have everything closed and we will be preparing for Cyclone Evan. We have a skeleton team ready who will move in to clean and secure all of our machinery and store everything to safety.

"Once the cyclone passes, we will have a maintenance period where we will assess the damages and then have everything repaired before we can reopen."

Mr Khan added the maintenance period would also give time to farmers to recover their damaged crops.
