THE Kuata Sevens tournament, which was the brainchild of the late Maleli Kunavore, will take place tomorrow in the memory of the fallen rugger at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka.

Tournament organiser Sitiveni Tikoirewa said the former Flying Fijian initiated the idea of the tournament before his untimely death last month.

"This tournament is organised to pay tribute to him (Maleli) however we will organise one tournament next year to be named Maleli Kunavore 7s tournament," Tikoirewa said.

The Kuata rugby team, formed in the 90s, is from the Nakalavo Village in Nadroga.

The club has produced some top rugby players like Maleli, Epi Kunavore, Emosi Kunaika, Sailosi Rabonaqica, Mitieli Nacagilevu and Peni Naulago, who featured for Police in the 2012 Sukuna Bowl.

Tikoirewa said the Kuata 7s tournament was aimed at exposing the talents of Nakalavo and Qereqere village youths.

"And at the same time to try and fundraise for two agricultural projects namely a piggery and a poultry farm so that the team is self-reliant and self-funded in the future," he said.

"So far top teams like Red Rock and Tokatoka Westfield Barbarians have confirmed their participation.

"We would also like to call upon the assistance of diehard rugby fans in Nadroga to come and support us this Saturday."

Tikoirewa said they were hunting for sponsors to assist them in organising the tournament next year as they plan to make Kuata 7s an annual event.
