COOLUM, Qld - Scott Strange has fired a sizzling six-under 66 to lead the Australian PGA Championship by a shot after a dramatic opening morning that saw Greg Norman withdraw due to food poisoning.

After starting his round at the 10th hole at 7am local time, Norman battled to consecutive bogeys before shaking hands with playing partners Stuart Appleby and Jake Higginbottom on the 11th green.

It was a better morning for Strange who made three birdies either side of the turn to lead China's Xin Jun Zhang (67) by a shot.

Peter Senior is one of five players a further stroke back after carding a solid four-under 68 in windy conditions.
