NO reports of damage were received following a 5.0 magnitude earthquake that struck 312.19 kilometres Southeast of Tubou Village, Lakeba, Lau yesterday afternoon.

According to the Mineral Resources Department the earthquake occurred at a depth of 35 km.

Jonetani Onoitoga, a resident of Tubou Village in Lakeba said he did not feel the tremor.

Department director Malakai Finau said members of the public should not fear or panic as such earthquakes posed no threat.

"People only need to be on alert as earthquakes are occurring all over the world," Mr Finau said.

He said Fiji sat on the Pacific Rim of Fire, which was the reason for such earthquakes.

Mr Finau said for this year alone a total of 199 tremors occurred in the Fiji region.
