Take heed of fire warning

MEMBERS of the public are advised to take heed of National Fire Authority (NFA) Fire safety tips and take extra precautions during this festive season.

NFA chief executive officer John O'Connor said with Christmas and New Year's approaching it was important that the public took extra precautions.

"A lot of gatherings will take place and as a result any sort of distraction can lead to a major fire incident," Mr O'Connor said.

He said unattended cooking was one of the leading causes of structural fires.

"Out of the 81 structural fires so far this year, 10 fires were caused by unattended cooking. Kitchen fires begin with cooking equipment but most are preventable if people take extra care when cooking," Mr O'Connor said.
