New computers for centre

Ramakrishna Mission is an Implementing Agency for European Union funded—Vocational training program being implemented at the Vivekananda Technical Centre, Nawaicoba, Nadi.

Under the program the following equipment and facilities have been set up or upgraded for offering of eight courses from January 2013.

The automotive mechanic and automotive electrical and electronics programs will be now be conducted in a well-equipped workshop with the following new equipment:

Two pole hoist and four pole hoist, wheel alignment machine, scanner for computerised diagnostics of latest engines, work press, wheel balancer, radiator flush machine, air condition evac machine, compressor, full set of mechanics tools, air tools, transmission stand, hose reel, flow metre, pump oil, air flow line with chuck, prop up stand, radiator pressure tester, brake bleeder, vice, piston pusher, bench grinder, brake fluid tester

From 2013, VTC will offer Fiji Higher Education Commission approved certificate level three programs in (1) cookery and (2) baking and patisserie in a well-equipped kitchen upgraded with the following additional equipment:

Three deck commercial gas oven with steam function, commercial spiral mixer for bakery, commercial electric platform scale with led display, commercial two solid door upright chiller, stainless steel work table with undershelve, stainless steel two bowl sink with undershelve, commercial double door upright vegetable/ fruit drying machine, double tank deep fryer oven, combine smooth and char grill, commercial floor type dough sheeter machine, commercial vacuum packaging machine.

Under the project 40 new computers were procured to conduct courses in advanced office technology and PC maintenance & networking. These have been setup in two new computer labs.

Non-formal training in poultry and apiculture (bee keeping) will be provided an a new poultry shed and a 20 box bee-keeping training unit

A new commercial scale Agriculture programme is being started at the Malolo campus with the construction of a 1150 sq.m hydroponic training unit.

This will have special training facilities such as Nutrient Film Technology (NFT) for growing lettuce and herbs, flood and drain tables for growing seedlings, and venturi system for growing tomatoes, capsicum, cucumbers through out the year. Farmers will be trained in the modern and scientific methods of farming.

From January 2013, Vivekananda Technical Centre, Nawaicoba, Nadi will be offering Fiji Higher Education Commission approved Certificate 3 level National Qualifications listed in the table below.

Under the Fiji Qualifications Council requirements for certification, industrial attachment is an important component of the training. VTC will co-ordinate with the industry to assist in arrangement of industrial attachment for the trainees.

A special feature of the new vocational training structure at VTC is that industrial attachment will be incorporated into the very structure of the VTC programs.

Trainees will have industrial attachment along with technical training at the Vivekananda Technical Centre.

This new arrangement for workplace practical experience will greatly enhance the quality of vocational training. It will also support and meet the needs and expectations of the industry. Furthermore, trainees will get an opportunity to the trainees to prove themselves in the workplace and secure employment in due course.

Under the newly designed structure, trainees will attend classes at VTC for three days of a week (alternate week days- Monday, Wednesday and Friday) and be attached to a relevant workplace for three days (alternate week days- Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday). A tentative course structure for 2013 is as follows:

The response from business houses and industrial workplaces to take up trainees for attachments has been very positive and encouraging.
