Netters go on break

THE Fiji under-21 netball team management has extended the squad fitness test to next year.

Initially the plan was to conduct the beep test when the players regrouped last week but team manager Della Shaw said they wanted to give players a break during the festive season.

But she said they were drafting a training program which they expected the players to follow while on break and come back prepared for the fitness test on January 14.

In the meantime, the players are having court session three times a week and working hard on the individual skills under coach Moape Vu.

"We realise the girls have exams going on so we extended the individual training program and conduct court sessions in between," Shaw said. "We are resting the girls in between and giving them a break in the festive season but we are looking at the program to keep them fit during this break."

Shaw reiterated they needed the commitment of the players while following the individual training programs. She said the onus was on the players to do the hard yards during the break to maintain their spot in the national team.

"Basically, we are pushing the girls harder to a whole new level during the training," Shaw, the former Fiji weightlifting rep said.

The Fiji team is preparing for the World Youth Championship in Glasgow, Scotland next year.
