Treatment order

THE Suva Magistrates Court has issued an order for escapee Iowane Benedito to be taken to the CWM Hospital for medical treatment. Benedito appeared before Magistrate Yohan Liyanage and asked the court to issue an order for hospital treatment. Benedito had escaped with three other inmates from the Korovou Prison and was recaptured nine days later. The court ruled Benedito be taken to the CWMH for treatment before midday yesterday.

Case transfer

THE hearing of a school caretaker charged with sex-related offences will be heard in the High Court in Suva. The caretaker appeared before Magistrate Chaitanya Lakshman. The police prosecution made an application to transfer the case to the High Court. Magistrate Lakshman ruled in favour of the prosecution and granted bail to the 37-year-old accused with strict conditions. The plea has been deferred to the next hearing date on January 18 next year.

Bail for duo

TWO men charged with the alleged rape of a 17-year-old girl over the weekend appeared in the Nadi Magistrates Court yesterday. Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said the accused were 20-year-old Isireli Reece and 18-year old Faijelo Delai of Nadi. She said the two were bailed with sureties to reappear in the High Court in Lautoka next month. It's alleged that on December 1, the suspects allegedly had unlawful carnal knowledge with the 17-year-old, a sixth former.

Case adjourned

NATIONAL Netball rep Seruwaia Vonolagi has appeared before Magistrate Yohan Liyanage charged with one count of assault causing actual bodily harm. Ms Vonolagi was expected to have entered a plea but her counsel informed the court they had yet to receive Ms Vonolagi's charge statement and summary of facts of the alleged incident. The case has been adjourned to January 7 next year when Ms Vonolagi is expected to take a plea.
