Call for shift in boxing focus

FORMER Boxing Commission of Fiji director Allen Harris believes more focus needs to put into breeding boxers above the middleweight category.

This is after Tongan Napolean Taumoepeon totally outclassed Ratu Atama Tuilolo of Navosa in the 6x3 min heavyweight contest.

Ratu Atama lacked technique in the fight. Taumeopeon looked fit and kept his composure while Ratu Atama was swinging punches at every opportunity.

The fight was over in the second round after Taumoepeon copped Ratu Atama with a short right punch.

The fight was stopped within 22 seconds of the round as Ratu Atama was left dazed and wobbled around the ring.

Harris said there was a need to identify heavyweight prospects.

He said these boxers needed the right guidance.

"Taumeopean won fair and square," Harris said.

"We are certainly lacking in the heavier weight department. From the middleweight and below we are looking good."

"I think the program was successful. If it had not rained then we would have had a crowd of more than 2500.

"However it is good to see boxing up and running. The boxers gave a lot of commitment. Their fitness level was on par despite the long layoff."
