Farmer loses all in fire

A FORTY-EIGHT year old farmer who went to tie his bullocks in a nearby farm on Saturday morning returned home to find his property burnt to the ground.

Om Sami, who lives in Qelewaqa outside Labasa Town, could not believe his misfortune.

"By the time I came back, the house was totally destroyed and the flames were huge so I stayed away from the compound," he said.

"I didn't call the National Fire Authority because the whole house was destroyed so I just called the police."

Mr Sami said he had lit the firewood and put the kettle on the fire place before going out to tie the bullocks. He estimated his loss at $10,000.

Divisional fire officer north John Pillay was at the scene with his team yesterday.

Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said investigations into the fire were continuing.
