THREE people are dead and two are in critical condition at the Ba Hospital after a horrific mid-day accident at Karavi, a settlement situated between Lautoka and Ba.

Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro confirmed that the deaths were the result of a head-on collision between a rental car and a bus.

The men driver of a rental car and two female passengers died en route to the Ba Hospital.

"Operation Blitz continues in the division, however, this was unfortunate and until we can gather the full particulars of the accident the only advice we can give is for drivers to be safe and alert at all times as accidents can occur at any given time," she said.

Ashneel Elvin Mudliar, a labourer who was tending to cattle near the scene of the accident said he heard a loud bang and rushed to the scene of the carnage. "When I got there I saw the passengers trapped in the vehicle and tried to get them out of the vehicle. They were all very badly injured and there was blood everywhere. We managed to stop a vehicle and moved the victims to the hospital," he said.

Ms Naisoro said the driver of the bus was taken to the Ba Hospital for observation and once cleared by medical authorities he would be interviewed by the police.
