Breakdown prompts import

FIJI'S sole cement manufacturer Fiji Industries Limited (FIL) had to import cement from New Zealand to cater for customer demands for the next two weeks.

This after it reported a mill motor breakdown at its manufacturing plant in Lami in a market announcement on the South Pacific Stock Exchange (SPSE) on Monday.

Fijian Holdings Limited chairman Iowane Naiveli said following a routine maintenance and upon the commencement of the mill operation, the main motor shaft broke down.

"The customised shaft has been sent to NZ for urgent repair and will reach the plant in Lami by mid-next week," Mr Naiveli said. Following the breakdown, the company said plant engineers had installed the back-up mill motor but it had failed to handle the full load.

Now, engineers were working round-the-clock to ensure the plant became fully operational.
