School scoops 'clean' honours

A LAUTOKA school which launched a drive to change students' littering behaviour two years ago has scooped top honours in a competition.

The positive attitude developed by students of Lautoka Andhra Sangam School helped them beat 25 other entrants from Lautoka for the second year in a row.

Organised by the Lautoka City Council, Ministry of Education and the Department of Environment, the program targeted children to create awareness on waste minimisation in homes and communities.

Special administrator Praveen Bala said children were effective agents.

The competition was organised in three divisions — recycling, awareness-raising and composting.

"I am hopeful that with greater educational programs and civic pride among our children today, we can succeed in getting rid of old habits," Mr Bala said.

Teacher Sunita Devi Prasad said the campaign also educated children on how to respect the environment.

"We hold competition between classes on various clean-up campaigns and such initiatives that enable the students to fully understand the theme of the clean school competition," she said.
