THERE are exciting times ahead for social welfare recipients in the country.

And the government is increasing the number of people who would benefit from the Ministry of Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation's assistance scheme from next year.

Social Welfare Minister Dr Jiko Luveni said from next year the ministry would provide welfare assistance to families instead of individuals.

"Through the new policies in the 2013 National Budget we won't be targeting individual assistance but families as a whole," she said.

She said it meant that previously within one family three or four people living in poverty and unemployed, only one used to receive assistance but this would change.

"This time we will consider the family, maximum of four which means we will be able to provide the family $150 plus $30 food voucher every month," Dr Luveni said.
