Union calls for system upgrade

ALTHOUGH government has allocated $2million for cane access roads next year, the National Farmers Union believes a proper system should be put in place to allow a speedy process of repairing roads.

NFU president Surendra Lal said when the Fiji Sugar Corporation was in charge of distributing funds to improve cane access roads, repair works were done on time.

"But since government shifted the funding to the offices of the divisional commissioners, we have seen some delays to repairing cane access roads."

"That is why some farmers were affected in the last season with transporting their cane to the mill as the condition of cane access roads was not so good," Mr Lal said.
