Ensure mill efficiency

Serafina Silaitoga

THE government should ensure all sugar mills operate smoothly from next year if farmers are to be paid on the quality of cane.

This comment by National Farmers Union president Surendra Lal followed the statement by Prime Minister and Finance Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama yesterday that quality of cane payment would begin next year.

Mr Lal said existing factors like continuous breakdown of mills affected the quality of cane.

"If farmers are to wait outside the mill for two days because of breakdown of mills, the quality of cane will certainly drop," he said.

"Now that won't be the farmers' fault because the breakdown of mills is beyond their control.

"So the Fiji Sugar Corporation and government need to ensure that the mills operate to a maximum level with no breakdowns to be fair on the farmers."
