Exciting new league

THE Fiji Football Association plans to draw more excitement and turn the 2012/2013 Fiji Sun/GP Batteries National Football League more interesting.

The league starts next month and will be played in a new format with a minimum of two games played at one venue.

Districts with a smaller fan base, like Navua, Tavua and Savusavu, will play their games elsewhere.

Only four venues, Ba's Govind Park, Nadi's Prince Charles Park, Labasa's Subrail Park and Lautoka's Churchill Park, will be used to host the games.

"This is something positive for Fiji FA," Fiji FA Rajesh Patel said.

"We have been trying to do this and now the districts have realised that most of them have gate-taking problems and lack a good fan base.

"They have realised that we have to work together to get more fans and if this happens everyone will benefit and football will be the winner at the end of the day."

Patel said all the teams playing at the one venue would share the gate takings.

"It was a nice gesture by the bigger teams that have decided that if four teams are playing at a venue then after the Fiji FA League Board shares and match expenses the takings will be shared four ways equally," Patel said.

"This will help the smaller districts develop. Overall this will improve our league standard."

This was decided at the National League Board meeting in Ba last weekend.

The bottom two teams from next year's league will face automatic demotion into the lower tier as the 2013/2014 league season will only be played by the top eight finishers.
